FlyNode vs Heroku
Heroku prices each process type on its own dyno and each database as an add-on. FlyNode prices one workspace of RAM, CPU and storage that your apps and databases share.
Heroku
From $5/mo per dyno
Eco $5 (sleeps), Basic $7, Standard-1X $25
- Each process runs on its own dyno, priced per dyno
- Eco dynos sleep after 30 minutes idle
- Postgres is an add-on from $5 (1 GB)
- No free dyno or database plan
- Large Performance and Private dynos
FlyNode Cloud Workspace
From $3.95/mo
One workspace; apps and databases share it
- Up to 5 apps on Micro, 100 on the largest
- PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB or Redis in the same workspace
- 20 GB to 300 GB NVMe SSD storage included
- Apps stay on; nothing sleeps
- Hundreds of 1-click apps
The short version
Heroku is a mature platform with a large add-on marketplace and big dedicated dynos. FlyNode is the cheaper home for several small and medium apps and their databases.
Price
What a few setups cost
Monthly list prices.
Three small always-on apps
$15.05 a month lower0.5 GB RAM each, $7 per dyno
2 GB RAM, 1 CPU, 30 GB NVMe SSD, up to 10 apps, shared by all apps
One app with a Postgres database
$8.05 a month lower0.5 GB dyno, Postgres with 1 GB of disk
App and PostgreSQL in 1 GB RAM, 20 GB NVMe SSD
One app that needs about 2.5 GB of RAM
$238.05 a month lower2.5 GB RAM, dedicated
3 GB RAM, 2 CPU, shared by your apps
Heroku's Performance and Private dynos are dedicated to one app; a FlyNode workspace shares its RAM and CPU between your apps, so heavy apps compete for it. Heroku's Eco dynos ($5) sleep after 30 minutes without traffic.

Which one
The honest answer
Both are good. Here is when each one fits.
When Heroku is the better pick
Choose Heroku if
- You need dedicated dynos bigger than 32 GB of RAM, or network isolation with Private Spaces.
- Your app depends on Heroku add-ons or buildpacks you do not want to replace.
- You want each process type isolated and scaled on its own dynos.
When FlyNode is the better pick
Choose FlyNode if
- You run several small or medium apps and want one low price for all of them.
- You want your database in the same workspace instead of a separate add-on bill.
- You want apps that never sleep on the smallest size.
- You also host a server GTM container and want one account and one bill.
Switching
Moving over takes three steps
Keep your current host running until you are happy with the new one.
- Step 1
Pick a workspace size
Sizes start at $3.95 a month. Move up later and your billing date stays the same.
- Step 2
Deploy your app and database
Deploy from a GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket repository, add a database and copy your data across.
- Step 3
Point your domains
Add your domains, let SSL issue, then switch DNS from Heroku when you are ready.
FAQ
Good questions, short answers
Questions about this comparison. More? Email hello@flynode.io.
A FlyNode workspace is one pool of RAM, CPU and storage that your apps and databases share, so you pay for the pool once. Heroku prices every dyno and every add-on separately, which is more isolated but adds up with each piece.
